In this guide

An averaging agreement is a formal arrangement between an employer and an employee that allows the employee’s working hours to be averaged over a set period of time, rather than being assessed on a daily or weekly basis.

Why use an averaging agreement?

  • To accommodate irregular or seasonal work.
  • To give employees more flexibility with shifts or rostered time.
  • To reduce the need for overtime payments, as long as the average hours don't exceed the legal limits.
